원본으로 재생을 함에도 불구하고 자막 때문에 다이렉트플레이(direct play)되지 않고 트랜스코딩이 걸리는 경우가 있다.
그런데 Plex를 사용하시는 많은 분들이 Plex서버만 신경쓰고 막상 Plex를 재생하는 기기를 생각하지 못하시는 경우가 많다. Plex는 서버설정에도 많은 영향을 받지만 재생기기의 영향을 받는 경우가 훨씬 많다.
먼저, Plex가 지원하는 자막형식은 아래와 같다.
기본지원: SRT, SMI, ASS, SSA, WebVTT
기기에 따른 지원: PGS, VOBSUB
그러나 Plex가 지원하더라도 재생 기기가 해당 자막을 지원하지 않으면 Plex는 트랜스코딩을 하게 된다.
Plex를 재생하는 방법으로 크게 두 가지 기기를 사용하는 것으로 가정한다. (1) TV, (2) 스마트폰이다.
(1) TV
TV의 경우 재생할 수 있는 자막의 종류가 다양하다. “supported subtitle format for LG Smart TV” 식으로 구글 검색을 해보면 lg 스마트 tv에서 기본으로 지원하는 자막 포맷을 확인할 수 있다. (가장 정확한 것은 제조사 홈페이지를 참조하자)
LG스마트TV의 경우 지원하는 자막은 SMI, SRT, SUB, ASS, SSA, TXT, PSB 파일들이다. 주로 한국에서 사용하는 자막들은 SMI인데 LG TV에서는 기본 지원한다.
따라서 Plex에서 영상을 재생할 때 SMI자막을 “기본 지원”한다. 그러므로 트랜스코딩이 걸린다면 이는 자막 때문이 아니라 다른 문제일 가능성이 높다. (TV에서 지원하지 않는 영상 포맷이거나 음성 포맷을 포함한 파일일 가능성이 높음)
삼성 H 시리즈 TV의 경우 지원하는 자막은 TTXT, SMI, SRT, SUB, TXT, SSA, ASS, PSB, XML이다. 따라서 이들 자막 중 SMI, SRT, ASS, SSA형식은 Plex에서 트랜스코딩 없이 재생 가능하다.
(2) 스마트폰(안드로이드)
애플 기기는 현재 보유하고 있는 것이 없어서 테스트를 할 수 없었다. 여기서는 안드로이드 기기에 대해서 설명한다.
안드로이드의 Plex앱은 Exo Player를 사용한다. Exo Player에서 재생할 수 있는 자막 형식은 다음과 같다.
WebVTT, TTML, SMPTE-TT, SRT, SSA, ASS
즉, Plex 안드로이드 앱에서 Direct Play할 수 있는 자막은 WebVTT, SRT, SAA, ASS 형식밖에 없다. 따라서 SMI 자막파일이 있으면 무조건 트랜스코딩이 걸린다.
Note: 사실, 위에서도 얘기했지만 SMI파일은 무조건 트랜스코딩이 걸린다는 주장은 사실이 아니다. TV에서는 Direct Play 재생이 되기 때문이다.
결론
결론적으로 TV와 스마트폰으로 모두 Plex를 잘 사용하시는 분은 번거롭지만 자막을 SRT형식으로 변경하는 것이 좋다. 그러나 필자처럼 TV로만 주로 Plex를 보는 사람이라면 굳이 SMI를 SRT로 바꿀 필요는 없다. (TV가 지원한다면)
